Readings and Prayers: June 28th

Today is the day when we especially remember St Peter, a favourite saint, as he’s such a human mixture.

Woodfield Team prayer. God our Father, you long to draw all people into your love; increase in number your church   throughout the Woodfield Team, deepen us as followers and learners of Christ and give us courage to share the good news of your kingdom. We pray this in the power of your Spirit, to the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect.

Almighty God, who inspired your apostle St Peter

to confess Jesus as Christ and the Son of the living God:

build your church upon this rock,

that in unity and peace it may proclaim one truth

and follow one Lord, your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

The Gospel. Matthew 16: 13-19

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ 14 They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15 ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’16 Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’

17 Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be  bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’

A suggestion: read the passage slowly and prayerfully a couple of times. Ask yourself:

What word or phrase resonates with or challenges me? What puzzles me? What is my response? What am I called to do?

Prayers for today:

  • For the parishes we serve and all who live in them that they might come to follow Jesus
  • For those who will visit the churches open for private prayer
  • For clergy and all ministers of the church at this Petertide: for Vivien and Barry celebrating the anniversaries of their ordination; for those who cannot be ordained this year yet due to Covid
  • For the churches of the Team as we work towards a good way to reopen for public worship
  • For schools as they work so hard for their students and seek to work out how all may return in the autumn
  • For a healing of divisions between those of different race, colour and creed, between the haves and the haves not
  • For our government and governments across the world
  • For those facing Coronavirus in other countries who do not have the resources we do
  • For those who suffer in body, mind or spirit.
